Gathered and Scattered: Episode 2 – Discussion Guide

Jesus came to seek and save the lost. His life wasn’t shaped so much by the major public moments but rather, his times away from people when he focused his attention solely on the Father. Then he would lean in with those closest to him, and then outwardly to the hurting and broken.
He invested in people’s lives almost rhythmically and deeply and the deposits he made always had a fruitful return. He invited people to follow him, to go with him wherever he went; and along the way, he challenged them to change.

Last week I referred to Mark chapter one where Jesus invites Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow him. It was an invitation to be together and he gave them access and to his life. They ate together, walked together, stayed together. They joined up with Jesus in response to his invitation and their lives became shaped by his way of life.
This is a great moment to pause and reflect on the things that have shaped your life.

What experiences have impacted you and shaped your view of who you are and who God is?
When you look at the life of Jesus, what are the things you admire most?

Take a few moments and reflect on those questions. If you are joining a Discovery Community, take time this week to share some of your reflections and what you admire most about the way Jesus lived.

If you’re not yet part of a community, take time this week to call a friend or someone from our Discovery family and ask them about the things that have shaped their life and what they admire most about Jesus.
Jesus said in John 13:15:
15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. He came to serve, not to be served and He showed his followers that way of life.

How has Jesus’ way of life shaped the way you live? If we are going to be shaped by the life of Jesus, we need to look to the patterns and rhythms of his life and put them into practice in our own lives and with each other as we are one big, extended spiritual family.
In 1 Corinthians 10 and 11, Paul wrote to the Corinthians believers:

1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. This is simply what we’re asking you to do, follow the example that has been given to us by Jesus. He gathered a few and walked closely with them.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion:

As you’ve heard this today, what do you think God might be saying to you right now?
What do you think God might want you to do in response to what He’s saying?
Who are you going to share what God is showing you?
