Lions and Trials and Cares – Oh Joy!

As Matt has shared before, we are all being formed by something and since there is no avoiding them in this life, trials and hardships are part of the things that shape our lives. What we believe about God’s role in them and how we respond to trials sets the direction for whether they are redeemed for HIs purposes or not.

James 1:1-4 NET

My brothers and sisters, consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything.

Romans 8:28-29 NET

And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose, because those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

Ephesians 4:13-14 NET

…until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

James 1:12-17 NET

Happy is the one who endures testing, because when he has proven to be genuine, he will receive the crown of life that God promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one….Do not be led astray, my dear brothers and sisters. All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change.

Hebrews 12:1-5 NET

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Think of him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls and give up.

During your Discovery Community gatherings, take time to discuss what kind of trials and hardships you’ve lived through. How did your attitude during the trial shape your life, both during and after that time.

What is your view of God’s intentions towards you in the middle trials?

What “finish line” are you looking to in your life right now?

If there are attitudes you need to repent of, who will you talk to about it?

Who can encourage you in the middle of your trials and you might you need to right now to encourage and point towards the Lord?
